During a Flood — Safety First

Immediate Actions

  • Move to higher ground if water is rising around your property
  • Turn off gas, electricity and water at the mains if safe to do so
  • Move valuables and important documents upstairs
  • Block doorways with flood barriers, sandbags, or towels
  • Call 999 if you are in danger or trapped by floodwater

Critical Safety Rules

  • Never walk or drive through floodwater. Just 15cm of fast-flowing water can knock you off your feet. 30cm can float a car.
  • Stay away from rivers, streams, and drainage channels
  • Do not touch electrical equipment if standing in water
  • Avoid contact with floodwater — it may contain sewage and chemicals
  • Listen for updates from the EA flood warning service

If You Must Evacuate

  • Follow instructions from emergency services
  • Take your flood kit: medication, phone and charger, important documents, warm clothing, torch
  • Lock your property and turn off utilities
  • Avoid walking through water deeper than your ankles

After the Flood

Do not return home until authorities confirm it is safe. Beware of structural damage, contaminated water, and damaged utilities.
