How to make your property resilient to flooding so it recovers quickly after a flood event.

What Is Property Flood Resilience?

Property Flood Resilience (PFR) combines resistance measures (keeping water out) and resilience measures (reducing damage when water gets in) to help properties recover quickly after flooding.

Resistance Measures

  • Flood barriers and door guards
  • Waterproof external walls and tanking
  • Non-return valves on drains
  • Airbrick covers
  • Raised thresholds

Resilience Measures

  • Water-resistant wall finishes (lime plaster, cement render)
  • Tiled or concrete floors instead of carpet
  • Raised electrical sockets and boiler
  • Stainless steel or plastic kitchen units
  • Sump pump with automatic float switch

The PFR Standard

The CIRIA Code of Practice (C790) sets out best practice for PFR. A surveyor certified under this standard can assess your property and recommend a tailored PFR plan.

Cost-Benefit Analysis

A typical PFR package costs £5,000-20,000 but can reduce flood damage costs from £30,000+ to under £5,000 per event. Most homeowners recover their investment after a single flood.
