The UK's Flood Warning System
How It Works
The Environment Agency operates over 1,000 monitoring stations measuring river levels, rainfall, tidal levels, and groundwater. This data feeds into forecasting models that predict when and where flooding may occur.
Warning Levels
Flood Alert (Be Prepared): Flooding is possible. Monitor the situation and prepare your flood kit.
Flood Warning (Act Now): Flooding is expected. Deploy flood defences, move valuables upstairs.
Severe Flood Warning (Danger): Severe flooding with danger to life. Follow emergency service instructions.
How to Register
- Visit gov.uk and search for 'flood warnings'
- Enter your postcode to find relevant warning areas
- Choose notification method: phone call, text, email, or all three
- Registration is free
Other Information Sources
- EA flood information line: 0345 988 1188 (24 hours)
- @EnvAgency on X: Real-time updates during events
- Check For Flooding: EA's real-time map showing live warnings and river levels
- Local news and radio: Carry flood warnings during events
Limitations
The system works best for river and coastal flooding. Surface water flooding from intense local rainfall is harder to predict and warnings may arrive with less notice.
