A Practical Guide to Flood-Proofing
Step 1: Assess Your Risk
- Check your flood zone on the EA's flood map
- Review historical flooding in your area
- Consider all sources: river, surface water, groundwater, sewer
- Get a professional PFR survey if you are in a known risk area
Step 2: Prevent Water Entry
- Doors: Fit flood-resistant doors or removable door barriers
- Airbricks: Install flood-proof airbricks or snap-on covers
- Walls: Apply waterproof render or external tanking below flood level
- Drains: Fit non-return valves to prevent backflow
- Windows: Seal basement windows or fit removable barriers
Step 3: Reduce Internal Damage
- Move electrical sockets, consumer unit, and boiler above likely flood level
- Replace ground-floor carpets with tiles or sealed concrete
- Use lime plaster instead of gypsum
- Choose solid wood or plastic kitchen units instead of chipboard
- Store valuables and irreplaceable items upstairs
Step 4: Prepare for Quick Recovery
- Install a sump pump with automatic operation
- Create a flood plan
- Assemble a flood kit
- Register for EA flood warnings
Step 5: Maintain Your Defences
- Test flood barriers annually
- Clear drains and gullies regularly
- Check non-return valves
- Review and update your flood plan yearly
