Types of Flood Barriers

Temporary Barriers

  • Sandbags: Traditional but labour-intensive. Effective for up to 600mm depth.
  • Water-filled barriers: Self-deploying tubes that fill with floodwater. Reusable.
  • Expandable barriers: Concertina-style metal or composite barriers.

Semi-Permanent Barriers

  • Door barriers: Aluminium panels that slot into door frames. Deploy in minutes.
  • Window barriers: Purpose-made covers for basement or ground-floor windows.
  • Flood gates: Metal gates for drives, passages, and larger openings.

Permanent Barriers

  • Flood walls: Brick, concrete or gabion walls around the property perimeter.
  • Glass flood barriers: Transparent panels preserving views while protecting.
  • Demountable defences: Engineered panels stored nearby, deployed when needed.

Costs

| Type | Typical Cost | Protection Depth |

|------|-------------|------------------|

| Sandbags (100) | £50-100 | 600mm |

| Door barrier | £200-500 | 600-900mm |

| Flood gate (3m) | £2,000-5,000 | Up to 1.2m |

| Perimeter wall (per metre) | £300-800 | Up to 1.5m |

British Standards

Look for products tested to BSI PAS 1188 or BS 851188. This ensures the barrier has been independently tested for water resistance under realistic conditions.

Deployment Time

Most temporary barriers need 5-30 minutes to deploy. Factor this into your flood plan — you need time between receiving a warning and water arriving.
